#4 Mack’s story: written by me

Hi everyone! I hope you’re having a lovely day! Before I start this post I would like to say thank you to everyone who commented on my last post HERE, I feel less alone in living through these things and it’s all because of you and this blog and that means the world to me!

I am so excited to show you the next part of the story I stopped writing a while back and lately told you I would continue HERE! (You can find parts 1,2 and 3 HERE and I would love if you could read them first to gain a deeper understanding as I am trying to find secret little ways to make them all entwine so that it is easier to imagine the characters living in the same world. Either way each segment can stand alone if you wish not to find out a small part of how the other characters end up/plays a part in the others storyline). I recently went back and found this series on my blog and was hit with inspiration to write more and I hope you enjoy it! πŸ˜„ I’m so nervous I can’t think of any jokes (lucky you! πŸ˜‚) So here it goes!

Mack’s story

The air conditioning is struggling to provide enough support for everyone in the office as they gasp and fan themselves with everything but their computer screens. I try to catch an eye with mine. Any of them and I find a target. Milly is peering over her cubicle trying to be in direct line of the artificial air. As her eyes latch onto mine i fix her with a ruthless glare and she shrivels back down into her seat behind the plasterboard wall. I bet she thinks  “Out of sight out of mind”. I look down at my screen and see that she is filing her nails….I don’t pay her to file her nails. What’s his name over at computer number 19 is looking over at her trying to tell her something without words as he makes a show out of typing on his keyboard. Milly’s not paying him any attention as she moves on to filing her other hand. She probably thinks he’s twitching again, quick involuntary movements that are easy to notice but difficult not to mention. Especially when told not to. Number 19 gives up on telling her how to do her job and I slowly lean towards my speaker. As I press down on the button and clear my throat I hear the file drop to the floor then I speak “miss Hays come to my office”

The tears were ready before she entered my office so that doesn’t make them my problem. Milly chews nervously at her cuticles as I hold my hand up to say no to her sitting down in the seat across from me. She stands awkwardly. “Mack, I….” Strike number one, my sigh fills the room before she continues, “Mr Phelps, we cannot work in these conditions. Yesterday was the hottest day of the year and the air conditioning doesn’t seem to be making a difference…” She stops and looks at me like she thinks I understand what she is getting at. I don’t, in fact I wasn’t really paying full attention to what she was saying. All I see is the nail hanging off her smallest finger and all I feel is disgust. For a second my eyes waver towards the plexiglass wall behind her and I see that someone took it upon themselves to get up from their work station and pick up the nail file. I need to rewind back the video and see who. When I return my gaze to Milly she smiles nervously before she starts to speak but she knows as well as I do she’s fighting a loosing battle “I propose that something is done about the air conditioning or at least the fans…” We both glance up towards the ceiling and take in the battered old fans that used to spin faster than my mind before she goes on “or I shall have to bring it up in our next council meeting alongside the fact that it could be the cause of one of your employees clearly having a disability that you are not paying any attention at all to” The entire “or” signals a bribe and that is strike 2. “Miss Hays only employees can go to council meetings and I don’t see how you would benefit from them seeing as you are no longer an employee” the room falls silent as she trys to make sense of my words and just when I think she has given up she squints at me with beady eyes “Mr Phelps I have worked here for 2 years, I am most definitely an employee…” She stops to purse her lips and I decide that that is time enough. “goodbye miss Hays. You will receive the contents of your work station in the next day or so if you would care to leave” I look back at my screen eager to see who left their station earlier on, only to find that Milly has not moved. In fact, she hasn’t even blinked yet. “Miss Hays you have been dismissed you may leave now” a solitary tear finds it’s way to the bottom of her cheek leading an unsightly trail of ink behind it. It is too horrible a sight to behold and just as I am about to flick the switch that alerts security to escort her from the building she addresses the elephant in the room and whispers “I expect to find my file within my things when they are returned” with that she leaves the room and the door clicks soflty closed behind her.

I watch on my screen as she slowly skulks towards her desk stopping to pick up her coat and handbag. When she has left the building I hit rewind. What’s his name from number 19 is not making my day very easy and I take note on a sheet of paper what is to be mine later on after all interferences are are done away with. But for now I can breath for there is one less body to part air with in this building.

…..I hope you liked this chapter! I would love to hear your opinions and thoughts on it! Is it weird that it felt amazing to write it? πŸ˜‚ Back when I stopped after part 3 I didn’t know where it was going (if I did I’m annoyed with myself for forgetting it πŸ˜‚) but I have a couple of directions now in which to go that I hope to share with you soon if you would like to read more!

Thank you so much for reading! πŸ˜‰πŸ’— Have a brilliant day!

  1. Hi! I just went back to read the beginning of this and it’s so intriguing! I love writing myself so it’s always cool to find others with a similar passion – I find that you build tension and craft dialogue really well πŸ™‚ Thanks for sharing this with us! ❀
