Meet Nina!! She’s a mad one πŸΎπŸΆ

Hi everyone, today’s post is a huge announcement! πŸ˜† Meet the newest addition to the family, Nina!! πŸ‘πŸ₯°

Nina is a Tibetan Shichon pup, she’s also a little terror but she’s becoming our little terror I like to think πŸ˜‚. I’ve been super busy taking care of her this last week and amongst all the chaos I thought it’d be nice to introduce her to you guys! (She’s just getting the hang of her name so I’d say it’s not exactly the worst time for new acquaintances and more words to remember but oh well 🀣). I named her that after “Nina, Pretty Ballerina” by ABBA as I used to listen to that so much when I was little 🀣 (So far she ain’t no ballerina, she acts more like a little hitman in disguise which is slightly terrifying πŸ•΄οΈ).

Losing Ruby my Labrador was the hardest thing ever and with all our dogs in the past, we never look to replace those memories that at this current time are sad but beautiful to recall. The aim was to give Toby (our Cavachon) a companion with a completely different personality and hope that within time they can become good friends. Here’s a recent pic of Toby getting some fresh air AWAY from Nina (The good friends part is gonna take some time! πŸ™ŒπŸ˜‚).

She can be a little devil but every day she has more and more moments of being well behaved….before taunting Toby but there’s always hope! πŸ˜‚ Frustration sets in if you tell her not to do something and she’ll go nibble on a carpet or in worse cases she’ll lash out but recognition is getting to be in those eyes that it’s not the thing to do because it doesn’t encourage the sweet, sweet term “good girl” and after seeing Toby get that praise, her jealousy seems to be on our side when training πŸ˜‚. Altho I will say, she probably thinks her name is No-Nina at this point in time!

She sleeps well both at night and a lot through the day amongst bouts of play (she’ll just drop and we’ll all breathe a sigh of relief, plopping her in her bed πŸ˜‚). Her toilet training is an odd one because she goes more on the pad than off, we weren’t even told she was used to them or trained in anyway but she clearly knows right from wrong and it depends how far off from a pad or miffed with us she is as to whether or not she uses one! πŸ™„πŸ˜‚

In such a short space of time she’s noticably growing which is so cute to see! (Hopefully she doesn’t end up bigger than Toby before they’ve become friends if at all or there could be a problem on our hands with her ever present want for power πŸ˜…). This growth spurt is most definitely because she eats so much which is understandable after having to share before (she runs straight over to her bowl after waking up from naps and we’re like “NOOOO” as we watch her gain more and more energy from it 🀣. She’s easily distracted so if she bites us or chews something she shouldn’t you just wave a toy in her face and she’s gone after it like outta sight outta mind 😡.

Life has altered immensely with her being here and I hate to think about that change because it gets me to thinking about Ruby who I don’t think I’ll ever stop missing. Sometimes through holding onto everything but losing her and all those happy memories it’s a lot easier to see the here but I guess it’ll take time to get used to the fact that she’s no longer with us.

Nina has us running around in circles and poor Toby is a bit out of breathe from this through wanting to maintain his same level of play but also keeping her at bay through standing his ground when challenged so he’s often exhausted at the end of the day. In saying that, his mood has noticably picked up with Nina being a welcome distraction (doubt he’d admit it πŸ˜‚). Hes a happy go lucky dog and Ruby being gone tore him apart as he was once the puppy that Nina is now and their friendship was so strong. Today he’s still our baby boy, one of those forever pups and ontop of that we’re getting to see a side of him we hadn’t known existed. I mean we knew he could stand his ground as he’s no pushover but he’s really trying to in the nicest way possible show her who was here first and the overall order of things. She needs to know that he’s not one of her brothers she used to beat up….yet anyway once he likes her more! πŸ˜‚ It’s all good and well her biting us as we can train her to do otherwise with her being easily distracted but it’s nice to see that Toby was quick to realize he’s on our side in this and it’s about getting her on that page too!

Toby is an excellent example for Nina to look up to and we really hope she learns from him as he’s the sweetest boy! He can be a very anxious dog and we’ve found that the trick is to acknowledge him first whenever possible so in the morning if they’re both there we’ll say good morning to him first (it might sound crazy but we don’t want him thinking he’s being replaced when in his head Ruby’s gone too). So far that’s working really well as at first he was a bit detached but now he’s realizing that we still love him and nothing else has to change. He’s happily running by her to grab toys when before he was worried to do so as she’d lash out and he’ll lay beside us when he wouldn’t if he could smell that she’d been there previously which must have been a shock at first to know she’d laid in his space. It’s all progress and those short moments of peace between them aren’t being overlooked before she ruins it + steals his toys or brushes against him for no reason other than thinking she’ll get away with it and the whole rigmarole begins again πŸ’₯🀣.

When she’s fast asleep in your arms it’s easy to forget her mad moments, she’s adorable and I love how comfortable she’s getting to be around us! πŸ€— In the beginning it was difficult to juggle it all and I’d collapse in bed at the end of the day, dog tired and knowing for a fact that I hadn’t gotten much of my to do list done but now it’s a lot easier through a sort of routine forming around where she’ll be as the day goes on and her adapting to that. You’d think we’d never had a puppy before when we have but she’s just a whole other story when you’ve got to think about keeping Toby’s spirits up after such a big change (she puts his version of energetic to shame with her mad moments but at least he takes breaks from play, she gets way too annoyed if the subject of rest is implied!)

I think she’s yet to meet our cat Bertha but that’s a good thing to leave as Bertha is a bit on the wild side with other animals (even Ruby and Toby as she’s only been with us for a little over a year since we rescued her in January 2020). She’s more of a people person and is likely to be found following my sister around the garden (as my sis is growing loads of veg, fruit and flowers out there now) and looking for ways to get at free treats (I did not know some cats like vegetables!! She’s like a woman on a mission trying to get at that stuff πŸ˜‚).

Back on topic (sorry Bertha!), Nina loves her toys despite stealing some of Toby’s (there’s one that looks like one of her sisters and she goes crazy with it so I’m guessing they weren’t on good terms but then again it also looks like Toby which is more of a worrying concept πŸ˜‚). To be honest, Toby actually looks like her mum despite not being of tibetan descent (just the Bichon side of things) so there was wishful thinking in that I’d imagined them getting on quite fast but in reality that will take time. She has to learn to respect him and that won’t happen if she keeps running off with his toys whilst he tries to play with them! Sometimes we’ll catch him dropping toys in front of her so I think he’s asking for it really (we all know he’d love a play buddy as he’s crazy about fetch so he’s got some wishful thinking of his own going on there!).

Anyway, I’ll be sure to post more about both Nina and Toby’s ever changing journey in the future! (I could even write about Bertha alone as she’s a real character 😺). There’s a lot to say as they’re all bundles of life and energy. It’d be nice to document it all here so you guys can watch Nina grow from a pup and see how she gets on! More and more of her personality shines through everyday and we’re continuously learning what we should and shouldn’t do (like leaving his food where she can get at it 🀦🏽 Somebody obviously thinks they’re better than puppy kibble πŸ˜‚) and letters, don’t get me started on the amount of paper I’ve found torn and had to take from her! She’ll look at me like I’m the meanest person ever but I don’t remember making a big thing about paper being one of her toys….it’s not so I didn’t! 🀣 On that venting note I’ll leave you with a question I’ve wanted to know this entire time, have you got any pets?? I’d love, love, LOVE to hear about them so drop a comment!

Thank you for reading and I’ll see you again next Friday with something that may or may not revolve around Summer πŸŒžπŸ‘€. Take care and have a lovely day! πŸ’—πŸ’—
