My Favourite Podcasts – Jan/Feb 2020!

Hi everyone! 🎙️

Recently, more than ever before I have been listening to podcasts whenever I get the chance. They are an amazing creation that made me realize that you don’t need the visual aspect of media to be entertained, your mind is kind of creating its own version of it whilst listening along to the words 😵

A lot of the time I don’t see anything at all, I just stare off into space taken in by the sound which is quite frightening but not enough to stop doing it of course 😂. Today I thought I’d share a couple of the podcasts that really stand out from the rest and because of this I am obsessed with them at this moment in time, here goes everything:

Ear Hustle

Ear Hustle brings you the daily realities of life inside prison shared by those living it and stories from the outside, post incarceration. The podcast is a partnership between Nigel Poor (a Bay area visual artist) and Earlonne Woods (formerly incarcerated at San Quintin State Prison) and was co-founded with former San Quintin resident Antwon Williams. The Ear Hustle team works in the San Francisco Bay area both in San Quintin State Prisons media lab and from offices on the outside to produce stories that are sometimes difficult, often funny and always honest. Episodes are a nuanced view of people involved with the American prison system and those reintegrating into society after serving time.

Ear Hustle was the very first podcast that made me sit up and listen. The fact that it lets you in on what life is like inside prison and also describes stuff that I would never have thought about before is really captivating. I’ve always been entertained by things that put me in other peoples shoes (not that I’d want to be put in the shoes of a criminal 😂) and Ear Hustle does a good job of that. It’s interesting hearing the stories of inmates, what drove them to insanity and how those that have since left the prison coped whilst in there. I don’t know if I would be as into this if it were a video as it’s told well solely through words so I’m glad I discovered it as a podcast!

Welcome to Night Vale

Twice-monthly community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale where every conspiracy theory is true. Turn on your radio and hide.

This has a very Twin Peaks feel to it and those of you that have been here with me for a while will know how much I love that show, naturally I have been taken in by something with a similar vibe. I don’t fully understand it but I am guessing that that is the point. I don’t think I’d want to understand half the stuff that’s going on, it would be too much to handle 😂 How can someone write this, it’s just so creative and out of this world!?

The Daily Poem

Presented by Close Reads Podcast Network, The Daily Poem offers one essential poem each weekday morning. From Shakespeare and John Donne to Robert Frost and E.E Cummings, The Daily Poem curates a broad and generous audio anthology of the best poetry ever written, read aloud by David Kern and an assortment of various contributers to the Close Reads Network. Some light commentary is included and the shorter poems are often read twice as time permits.

I want to discover new poems and this podcast helps me to do that whilst also giving a perspective on what each one is about. Sometimes it’s nice to hear a poem being read out loud compared to just reading it in my head as without having to do that activity there is more space in my head for me to create the visual aspect of each poem and also think about what it could all possibly mean. I pick up on different things hidden within the writing as I hear it that I doubt I would have come across if I were reading a written poem myself so I’m grateful for it too if that makes sense? 🤔

The Habitat

On a remote mountain in Hawaii there’s a fake planet Mars. Six volunteers are secluded in an imitation Mars habitat where they will work as imitation astronauts for one very real year. The goal: to help NASA understand what life might be like on the red planet and plan for the day when dress rehearsals are over and we blast off for real. Host Lynne Levy has been chronicling this experiment from the moment the crew set foot in their habitat, communicating with them through audio and diaries that detail their discoveries, their frustrations and their evolving and devolving relationships with each other. From those diaries, Gimlet Media has crafted an addictive serialized documentary: the true story of a fake planet.

This is so good! It’s like a space age reality show with a hint of science 🌙 I save this for when I have nothing to do during an afternoon as it makes the whole experience that bit more entertaining listening to it whilst the sun is shining into the room (or setting early/not out at all these days 😂) and it creates an atmosphere that I’ve never felt before. I’m guessing it’s as close an interpretation of living on Mars can be for now and that is pretty marvelous in itself.

The Orbiting Human Circus

Discover a wondrously surreal world of magic, music and mystery. This immersive, cinematic audio spectacle follows the adventures of a lonely, stage-struck janitor who is drawn into the larger-than-life universe of the Orbiting Human Circus, a fantastical, wildly popular radio show broadcast from the top of the Eiffel Tower.

I often listen to this before I sleep and then I kind of cheat and go to read the story excerpt at the end before I hear it as it can get pretty scary so reading it first is less of a shock as opposed to hearing it 😂 It’s such a unique podcast/way of telling a story and the voice actors are a joy to listen to. I can imagine it being a good film to watch too but I like how with it being a podcast the rest is left to your imagination 💫

The Box Podcast

When Addison Gilmore found the old lockbox of journals filled with entries about bizarre and terrifying events, she thought she’d stumbled upon a unique mass participation fiction project. But as she shares those stories and digs into their contents it becomes increasingly clear that these journals are more than they seem and she’s in over her head.

I’m not entirely sure how I found The Box 🤔 I haven’t listened to as many of these episodes as I have of the other podcasts so I’m not crazy about it but I still think it deserves a place on this list! You really have to pay attention to it or else you’ll forget what’s going on (well that’s what happens to me anyway 😂) but it’s an interesting concept and very imaginative.

Fake Heiress

The rise and fall of Anna Delvey who conned New York high society into believing that she was a multi-millionaire heiress. Vicky Baker and Chloe Moss dig deeper into the scandal.

This is the most recent podcast that I’ve delved into so I’m fairly new to it but judging by how fast I started liking it I can tell it’s going to be a gooden. I love how they act out some fictionalized parts and then switch to describing the true events, it all blends very well. It’s so strange thinking it’s a true story and trying to work out how Anna Delvey created this life for herself built upon a foundation of lies. It’s amazing the lengths some people will go to get what they want.

Alice Isn’t Dead

A truck driver searches across America for the wife she had long assumed was dead. In the course of her search she will encounter not-quite human serial murderers, towns literally lost in time and a conspiracy that goes way beyond one missing woman.

We’ll end the post with my absolute favourite podcast, Alice Isn’t Dead. This is from the writers of Welcome to Night Vale and you can tell. It is some creepy *#?@ 😂 I always feel the urge to listen to it in the evenings but it’s best left until the morning or else I will most definitely have nightmares. It’s so confusing! Every episode is so unique and has its own mini plot that keeps me guessing and I have to be careful not to have it on too loud or else when the narrator shouts or screams it hurts 😂 Jasika Nicole lends her voice to this whole thing and it probably wouldn’t be the same without her. I also love the part at the very end where they give you different reasons why the chicken crossed the road 🐔

And that’s that! Thank you for reading 😉 Do you listen to podcasts? What are your favourite ones? Any you would recommend? Let. Me. Know. 😂 and as always I hope you have a wonderful day ❤️
